bathes and spas of vegetarian Budapest

>> health on tap
the city's spas are world-famous for their health-giving properties and the summer heat makes swimming the most popular pastime, but Budapest has lots more to offer than mere water. Stay in our lovely vegetarian apartment for a comfortable holiday
<<

>> treat yourself
with so many health and organic shops in the city, you'll have no trouble meeting your dietary and health needs, and with most dental, detox or other health treatments costing less than elsewhere, you can combine the best of health and holiday <<

>> water water everywhere...
there is a brilliant website about the spas, in English and German, where you can learn about everything from water composition till the opening hours. Check their picture gallery too and you will want to visit them all! Below I give you my very personal opinion about the main spas and you can also open the map to see where they are in town.

>> customs and prices...
sitting in the hot pool is an easy task compared to buying a ticket! Well, buying a ticket is actually easy as all spas tend to have the price written in English and German as well and in bathes like Széchenyi and Gellért they are used to foreigners. They use a kind of refund system which means when you buy your ticket it is valid for the whole day but if you leave within a few hours you get some money back. So with the ticket you get a kind of plastic card or a little plastic device which records the time you enter and when you leave you put the card or the device in a slot at the exit, get a receipt and with that and your ticket you get a few coins back. Complicated? Might seem so but it tends to go smoothly. And of course I'm willing to explain again when you arrive. You can rent swimming costumes and towels at baths but don't expect the latest fashion. In most pools you have to wear a bathing cap in the swimming pool but not in the thermal pools. If there are attendants at the changing room it's a custom to give them 50 HUF tip. It's possible to get massages in the baths, but if you want quality massage you are much better off in a gym. There you would get an hour for what you give for 30 minutes in a spa. Interested? Ask me and I can give you contact details or book for you. What about the Turkish Bath? The sexes are never mixed, except for Rudas (see below) so it's either a men only bath or a bath that has women only days and men only days. It's a steam bath where you wear a very revealing apron type garment, very popular among the ageing population and the gay community. Saunas in Hungary are normally mixed and you wear swimming costume and sometimes towels too.

>> Gellért Baths
The most well know one, the majolica tiles and mosaics, Roman-style thermal pool and general opulence produce an unrivalled atmosphere. The outdoor pool has a wave machine! Beautiful building, but the most expensive spa and very touristy.<<
>> Széchenyi Baths
Several small indoor and three outdoor pools in a glorious palatial setting in the middle of the City Park. Watch the floating chess players as you benefit from the thermal springs. With water jets and a whirlpool, it's a favourite with families <<
>> Rudas Baths
just along from the Gellért, this bath was recently renovated. Open to men except Tuesday when open for Ladies. The only turkish bath that is open to both sexes on Friday and Saturday night from 10 pm till 4 am and Sunday 6 am till 5 pm.
>> Dagály Baths zsofi's choice
This bath is the closest one to budaveg, just at Árpád Bridge. It has a big swimming pool , two beautiful thermal pools and many lido pools in the summer. Lovely place, relaxed and local people only. A must with kids in the summer! <<
>> Palatinus, Római and Csillaghegyi Baths zsofi's choice
Three fantastic open air pools with swimming pools, lido pools and some with great water slides. Palatinus is on the Margaret Island so very close to budaveg. Almost like a seaside holiday! Check this site for details or ask me<<
>> Lukács Baths
At the Buda side of Margaret Bridge a beautiful spa that boasts the highest level of IQ among the swimmers: it's a favourite place of writers, journalist and politicians. The water is highly effective - just read the many plaques on the walls from grateful patients <<

Danubius Fountain at Erzsebet square
>> break free
book in to budaveg for a detox and we'll help you get in the right frame of mind and find the right facilities. Budapest has a high reputation for the quality of its treatments, so take the chance to shine <<

>> what about an ethical facial?
> there is an amazing Hungarian beauty treatment brand made entirely of veggie ingredients like herbs, paprika spice and similar; and of course not tested on animals. The brand was developed by Aunt Ilcsi and the products are highly efficient. Facials like all services are much cheaper here than in western Europe, you can get a facial with facial massage for under 20 euros.

>> massage
the best value for money is to go to one of the many first class gyms in Budapest. You can get an hour for around 17 euros. I can recommend you masseurs who speak English and do Swedish, lymphatic or Thai massage.

>> winter fun
Budapest has probably one of the most beautiful ice-skating rinks in the City Park with a castle as a backdrop. The Buda hills also provide a perfect place to sledge or ski for a few weeks a year.<<
